The whole reasoning behind bail
enforcement agent licensing laws is to
help prevent all of the perceived illegal actions of
renegade bounty hunters, yet
in NC (where you must be a
licensed bail bondsman or bail runner in order to legally arrest bail
fugitives) this past year we've had 2 abductions, a
shooting (a bondsman accidentally shot a defendant) and a couple of
other misc. headlines.
The problem I
see is this: when a bail bondsman
is chasing his own skip, oftentimes
there is a lot of emotion
at stake; the defendant is personally and directly putting the
bondsman at financial risk of losing the bond. All the bondsmen see is
dollar signs (his own) and he will
get the defendant at all costs. I've
seen this a hundred times. At least an agent can be a
little more detached and go about his business with a little less at
risk.
